The groundbreaking for the new construction of Leitz Park III, across the street from the the Leica Camera AG headquarters, took place on June 6.  It will consist of four new buildings.  The total investment is reported to be more than 60 million euros.

The new Leica Museum will house the extensive collection of Leica cameras, lenses and accessories from the original prototype Leica, the Ur-Leica from 1913 to current Leica products.  In addition, there will be a photo collection of many of the iconic photographs taken with Leica cameras over the years, as well as archival materials regarding the history of Leica.  The building will also house the Leica Academie as well as the Leica outlet store.

An important component is the Ernst-Leitz-Hotel.  The building will have 129 rooms and suites in a contemporary design as well as a restaurant with 120 seats and a banquet facility of over 5 thousand square feet. The opening is planned for the second quarter of 2018.

CW Special Sonderoptik GmbH, the maker of the Leica C cine lenses, currently housed in the building of VIAOPTIC, gets its own building.

The fourth building will offer facilities for a connection to the University.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the expansion of the Leitz-Park, Germany's leading center of the optical industry. This also increases the international appeal of the area.
