Another change that would have been necessary is a different lens mount. The old Nikon S lens mount, copied from the pre-warZeiss Contax was much to narrow for a modern line of fast lenses. The small exit pupil put considerable restrictions on the design of faster lenses. I am sure there are a number of improvements that could have been made, but these are the most important ones.LEICA Barnack Berek Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09055435560407011075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1320126156594375642.post-30614195440026371772013-12-20T15:10:59.279-06:002013-12-20T15:10:59.279-06:00I find it intriguing to think of a modern version ...I find it intriguing to think of a modern version of the Nikon S rangefinder camera. Of course the ideal is to combine both high resolution and high contrast for the best possible lens performance. This is being assured with Leica lenses more so than with most others.LEICA Barnack Berek Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09055435560407011075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1320126156594375642.post-70251715233937127682013-12-15T12:30:58.490-06:002013-12-15T12:30:58.490-06:00I am really surprised by the difference higher con...I am really surprised by the difference higher contrast can make to make a picture look sharper. Thanks for publishing it, it makes the difference of contrast vs. resolution a lot easier to understand.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1320126156594375642.post-37623054295995585852013-12-15T10:30:24.947-06:002013-12-15T10:30:24.947-06:00That is basically correct, but it doesn't mean...That is basically correct, but it doesn't mean that other manufacturers are incapable of making equipment with the same level of quality and precision. Unfortunately, most other companies have chosen to mass produce and mass market their wares. As my article clearly states, as good as mass production has become, it cannot possibly achieve the same extremely tight tolerances as Leica applies to all of their equipment, and it is exactly that which does result in the better performance levels.<br />It is interesting to note that in the 80s, Nikon was seriously considering to reenter the rangefinder market. However, with a limited market, due to the competition from SLR cameras, and having to compete directly with Leica, mass production was not an option. Especially competing with Leica meant that similar production methods would have had to be applied, and Nikon stated that very fact. The project was ultimately halted because Nikon came to the realization that their products would have been more expensive than Leica's, mainly because of inexperience in this field and because they would have had to hire especially trained personnel to make the rangefinder cameras and lenses. It did give me a better understanding what actually needs to be done to make a really good lens. Leica is obviously still on the forefront.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
