24-90 ZOOM VS. M LENSES ON THE LEICA SL (TYP 601)

By Luis Mora, Leica StoreMiami

A question that keeps coming up again and again is whether people should be shooting with M lenses or the 24-90 zoom on the Leica SL (Typ 601). A lot of Leica photographers have shied away from the zoom due to the feeling that it is too big, too heavy, or lacks the magic of the M glass. So, we took to the streets of Wynwood, Miami’s art district, to put both options to the test in a full day of shooting. And…. we made a video about it, filmed in 4K entirely on the Leica SL. David shot and edited the video – he’ll have more on the technical details in a future article.

In order to make this a fair test, we chose some of our favorite M lenses to cover the same focal length as the 24-90 zoom. Seriously, these M lenses are no joke. The fact that the zoom can hold more than hold its own against some of Leica’s finest fixed focal lengths says a lot about the 24-90mm Vario-Elmarit-SL.

Basically, the M lenses, with their small size and fast aperture offered great options for shooting inside where lighting and space was limited. The 24-90 excelled on the street, as it gave the maximum flexibility in a single package. Autofocus, near macro ability and not having to change lenses all proved to be huge advantages for the zoom. Check out the video for my thoughts while out shooting, lots of sample images and to get a taste of Miami!

We’re going to be making more videos like this. Be sure to check out our YouTube channel, throw us a like and subscribe by clicking the big button right here.

LEICA FIXES TL2 EVF ISSUE WITH FIRMWARE 1.1

By David Farkas, LeicaStore Miami

Leica has just released updated firmware for the newly launched TL2. After the first batch of cameras shipped a couple weeks ago, some early users reported their cameras being rendered inoperable. Leica acknowledged the problem and tracked down to issue to a firmware bug that could trigger when using the Visoflex EVF on the camera. Now, just a week later, the permanent fix is in. This firmware update is not just recommended for existing owners – it is mandatory. For all future TL2 cameras, the new firmware will be installed before leaving the factory.

You can download the firmware here: TL2 firmware version 1.1

Also, be sure to stayed tuned to Red Dot Forum for our full in-depth review of the new TL2!

Official Statement from Leica

Leica Camera would like to inform you that a new Firmware Version 1.1 is available for the Leica TL2 from our corporate website. The new firmware allows the Leica TL2 to be used with the external electronic viewfinder (Visoflex) and ensures complete functionality of the camera when used with the viewfinder.

Going forward, all Leica TL2 units shipped from Leica Camera Inc. (USA) will have the updated firmware, version 1.1.

To update the new firmware, please do the following:

  1. Download the updated version of the new firmware and double click on the ZIP-file to unpack it.
  2. Copy the firmware file onto a SD Memory Card in its top level folder.
  3. Turn off the power switch on the camera
  4. Insert the fully charged battery to the body. If the battery is not fully charged, the update process screen will not appear.
  5. Insert the SD Memory Card into the camera.
  6. Turn the camera on while simultaneously holding down the video recording button.
  7. The firmware update screen will appear. Press OK.
  8. The Leica TL2 will start the update process. The firmware update will take about 90 seconds.
  9. After the update process, restart the camera.

It is important that the camera is NOT turned off, SD Memory Card is NOT removed and do NOT remove the lens while the camera’s firmware is being updated.
