Nikon got its start by copying the body of the Zeiss Contax, but they equipped with the shutter of the Leica IIIc/IIIf to make the initial Nikon rangefinder cameras. When they decided to make an SLR, they removed the rangefinder and added a mirror box. But the camera maintained the basic body configuration as well as the Leica shutter.
