RESULTS – LEICA BARNACK BEREK BLOG PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

After a lot of evaluation, reevaluation and final scoring, we have the results of the LEICA Barnack Barek Blog Photography contest.  Had there been only one judge, this would have been substantially easier, but as I said in the introduction, with just a single judge, all submissions would have been subject to the likes and dislikes of just one individual.  I believe that to be unfair, which is the very reason why we decided on three judges.

The individual rankings clearly showed that our evaluations differed substantially from one to the other but a few of the photographs consistently received relatively high rankings.  This lead to the final selection – Drum roll….

First Prize:  Marlies Amling
                     Vilsheim (by Munich) Germany
                     www.die-lichtbildnerin.de

This photograph impressed all judges by its intensity.  Even though it is a still photograph, the guitar player seems to be moving.  Gritty, intense, and intimate. The motion is the key to conveying the passion of the moment, a human intensity that none of the other photos conveys

Second Prize:  Dr. William Petersen
                          Bemidji, Minnesota

The first thought I had when seeing this photograph was 'Ansel Adams'.  The texture detail and the contrast of rock faces to waves are fascinating.

Third Prize:  Tony McDonnough

Judge Douglas Ford wrote: My first impression of this shot was that it was eye-catching, but over-processed. The final effect is certainly surreal, but it seems to work. This shot has everything going for it—the square composition is solid, the cropping good, the linearity and geometry pleasing, the exposure right on, the color minimalist and well-placed.  This is a very nicely shot and processed bit of street photography.

Fourth Prize:  Jonathan Alaerts
                         Messelbroek, Belgium

This is probably one of the more controversial picks.  Douglas Ford found it a fascinating bit of street photography, and extremely photographic, in a Friedlander sort of way. Monika Kopeć immediately liked the layers of images and reflections.

Fifth Prize:  Garret Hacking
                      Denver, Colorado
                      PhotographyG.com

Garret Hacking has made a name for himself as an excellent photographer of Rock and other bands.  He has developed an incredible eye and the almost uncanny ability to shoot at just the right moment.

Sixth Prize:  Jerry Wetteland:

According to Douglas Ford, this photograph is well-composed and exposed, and the color and lighting are pictorially very attractive. I’m most intrigued by the post-processing—the yellows and blues are shades I associate with old halftone postcards. The overall effect is nostalgic, restful, and very pleasing.

Honorarble Mention:

Jerry Wetteland

  1. These are some very interesting images. I probably would not have put them all in the same order, but that's just me.

  2. Thanks for running the photography contest. I wish I would have entered some of my stuff. Will you do this again?

  3. how many participants did you have to judge? ist there also a professional category?

  4. We had over 40 participants. There was no professional category. I think a good photograph does not need to be labelled professional or amateur. It should be able to impress without that. I do know for a fact that several entrants were indeed by professional photographers.
