THE NEW LEICA SL

As of this writing, the “Das Wesentliche” event at Leica Camera AG in Wetzlar is still in full swing.  Here is what we know so far:

Leica introduced a new camera model, made in Germany, the Leica SL.  The camera is supposed to bridge the gap between the Leica M and the Leica S.  The camera is a professional mirrorless camera with a full frame, 24 MP CMOS sensor, with the fastest burst rate of 11 frames per second.  It features super-fast autofocus speeds competing against the best Pro-SLR cameras.  Fastest SD card standard UHS II, unlimited sequential shooting at
24MP and 11fps in JPEG format
The viewfinder is the largest electronic viewfinder with 0.8x magnification, 100% view and 4.4 million pixels for incredible clarity.
The camera features a Leica Maestro II processor with a 2 GB buffer memory.
The Leica SL also features full HD video capability of 4K with a frame rate of 120 fps, utilizing the full sensor area.
The Leica SL features ISO settings from a low ISO 50 to max ISO 50,000.
The professional shutter range is 1/8000sec to 30sec.
The body is made of a strong aluminum.  Itis dust, moisture and splash resistant, which also includes the lenses.

Along with the new camera, Leica is also introducing a new generation of Leica SL lenses.  Initially there will be 3 lenses with more to follow.  The new lenses feature a new AquaDura coating
24 to 90mm f/2.8-4 Vario Elmarit
90 to 120mm f/2.8-4 Apo Vario Elmarit
50mm f/1.4 Summilux

The Leica T lenses can be used without an adapter because both cameras do have the same lens mount.  In addition to the new Leica SL lenses, the camera will accept ALL Leica lenses ever made.  The Leica T lense can be used without an adapter since both cameras have the same mount.  All other lenses do require an adapter.

  1. I noticed that on some blogs the Leica haters already know that this new camera is no good. One even went as far as saying that the new lenses don't measure up to the competition. What is with these people?

    1. We shouldn't be surprised. Some people obviously feet it necessary to degrade the competition to make themselves or their camera gear look better. Deep down they know that Leica is at the very top.

    2. Unless they are delusional, they do know, and they obviously can't stand it. I am sure they are bitching about the price too. They should read your article about how Leica lenses are made. Maybe then they would realize that their camera manufacturers have nothing remotely close to offer.

    1. That, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. Isn't it more important what the camera can do than what it looks like?

  5. The S sells for only a bit more than the Leica SL which is about the same price of the Leica M

  6. It amazes me that people continue to make an ass of themselves by heaping criticism on Leica which is not based on facts.

    1. I agree. It is amazing how many of these self appointed marketing and camera experts are foaming at the mouth with venom about a camera that they have never even had in their hands.
