LEICA ANNOUNCES APO-SUMMICRON-M 50MM F/2 ASPH IN SILVER ANODIZED FINISH

Silver 50mm APO

By Josh Lehrer - Leica Store Miami

Today, Leica Camera has released the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH, silver anodized finish. First introduced in black finish only in 2012, the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH was designed with the demands of digital sensors in mind and thus delivers outstanding optical performance on the full range of Leica M-system cameras. Contrary to some of Leica’s past lenses in silver chrome finish, which were made from brass and thus quite a bit heavier than their black anodized counterparts, this lens uses Leica’s new silver anodized finish which retains the aluminum construction of the barrel with no weight penalty. This is not the first time we have seen the new silver anodized finish; earlier this year Leica released the Noctilux, 35mm Summilux FLE, and a full lineup of Summarit lenses in this finish as well.

Pricing comes in at $7,995. To place a preorder or view the full tech specs, click here. Please do not hesitate to call 305-921-4433 or email us with any questions.

The official press release, from Leica:

LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2 ASPH:
The sharpest ever standard lens is now also available in silver anodized finish

As of today, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH is now also available in a silver anodized version. Thanks to the perfect interaction of all parameters, from optical design and choice of materials to sophisticated and elaborate manufacturing and finishing, this high-performance lens is considered to be the reference lens amongst standard focal lengths. It impresses with exceptional imaging performance and sharpness that captures and resolves even the finest details.

The APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH standard lens is characterized in particular by extremely high contrast rendition from corner to corner of the image at maximum aperture and throughout the aperture range. The utilization of a floating element in its design ensures that this is also maintained to a great extent at close shooting distances. A total of eight lens elements are employed to achieve its exceptional optical performance. Three of these are made from glass types with anomalous partial dispersion to apochromatic correction and two of the others have a high refractive index. The specially formulated glass types employed are based on original developments from the former Leitz glass laboratory. The use of such glasses requires great effort and many years of experience. Thanks to the consistent advancement of optical technologies, processes have since been refined and perfected to achieve the best possible imaging qualities.

As is the case for all other Leica lenses, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH was designed and developed by Leica optical specialists in Wetzlar and represents the perfect combination of optical and technical expertise. As a particularly reliable product with enduring value with the quality guarantee “Made in Germany”, this lens is manufactured from the finest materials and is assembled completely by hand in an elaborate process. The combination of cutting-edge technologies and painstaking manufacturing procedures guarantees consistently excellent quality.
