LEICA OSKAR BARNACK AWARD 2017

The German photography magazine PROFIFOTO reports that a total of 2,700 photographers from 104 countries have applied for the international Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2017. On 20 June 2017 the 12 finalists will be announced.

After completing the application phase for the "Leica Oskar Barnack Award" (LOBA) 2017, the international jury will meet to select twelve finalists from the two categories Leica Oskar Barnack Award and Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer. Most of the 2,700 photographers came from China, France, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Korea and the USA. They entered a picture series of at least ten to a maximum of twelve photographs. The jury places great emphasis on photographers who have observed the coexistence of people and the environment, and have documented it creatively and with a view to the future.

The jury members of this year's competition are Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director of the Leica Galleries International (Salzburg, Austria), Michelle Dunn Marsh, Executive Director of the Photographic Center Northwest and publisher of Minor Matters Books (Seattle, USA), Christian Pohlert  of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Frankfurt, Germany, Douglas So, founder and director of the F11 Fotomuseum (Hong Kong, China), Scarlett Coten, photographer and laureate of LOBA 2016 (Paris, France).

The winners of the 37th LOBA will be awarded at a special ceremony in Berlin in September. The picture series of all twelve finalists will then be shown at a large exhibition in the "New School of Photography", Brunnenstraße 188-190 in Berlin. The LOBA catalog 2017, which presents the winners and finalists with their extensive series of pictures, will accompany the exhibition.

With prizes totaling around 80,000 euros, LOBA is one of the most highly awarded photographic competitions in the industry. The winner of the main category will receive a prize of 25,000 euros and a camera kit of the Leica M system (camera and lens) worth 10,000 euros. The winners of the junior prize will be rewarded with 10,000 euros and also a Leica camera with lens. In addition to the two main categories, ten additional photographic works will be awarded with 2,500 euros each.

The announcement of this year's shortlist will take place on June 20, 2017.
