In order to benefit from the advantages, online registration of the new product is required within three months from the date of purchase. On the Leica website mentioned below, step-by-step instructions guide you through registration in the login area. The personal Leica account required for this can be set up quickly and provides a practical overview of your own cameras and lenses.
The offer is also valid retrospectively for all M, SL and Q products purchased between October 2019 and September 30, 2021. These can be registered in the Leica account until the end of the year, where the advantages can then be activated:
Leica: Ralph Gibson - Hall of Fame Award
On November 4, 2021, within the framework of Leica’s Celebration of Photography event, the renowned American photographer Ralph Gibson will receive the Leica Hall of Fame Award for his life achievements. He will also be honoured with a comprehensive exhibition, which will run from November 5 until the end of February 2022, at the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar.
His imagery is both individual and timeless; his style is unmistakable. Over more than six decades, Ralph Gibson created a multifaceted body of work – one that is also directly associated with Leica.
Gibson first gained a solid foundation in photography in the US Navy, and then at the San Francisco Art Institute. Later, from 1961 to 1962, he assisted Dorothea Lange, and, from 1967 to 1968, Robert Frank. Right from the beginning, his style was firmly defined by graphic compositions with strong black and white contrasts, which even back then had less of an applied effect than an artistic one.
By 1966, after he had worked for a few months on a trial basis for the renowned Magnum Photos Agency in New York, he decided against a career as a commercial photographer or commercially applied photojournalist. He was far more interested in seeking out self-determined content, and discovering his own autonomous visual language.
Consequently, his oeuvre is a perfect example of the transformation of American photography in the seventies, which was pointing in a noticeably more individualistic, and less photo-journalistic and documentary direction, resulting in photography gaining evident acknowledgement as an artistic medium.
Ralph Gibson was born in Los Angeles on January 16, 1939. He learned photography in the US Navy, and then studied at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1960 to 1962. He is represented in the most important private and museum collections. His work has been published internationally, and he is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Leica Medal of Excellence in 1988, and the French National Order of the Legion of Honour. He lives in New York
Leica: Oskar Barnack Award 2021
The Venezuelan photographer Ana MarÃa Arévalo Gosen won the 41st Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2021 (LOBA) with her series “DÃas Eternos”. The Newcomer Award goes to the German photographer Emile Ducke with his series "Kolyma - Along the Road of Bones".
In her series “DÃas Eternos”, which was nominated for the award by Gonçalo Fonseca, Ana MarÃa Arévalo Gosen focuses on the living conditions of imprisoned women. The pictures have been taken with a Leica Q in prisons in Venezuela and El Salvador since 2017. With great visual impact and impact, Arévalo Gosen shows the causes and consequences of imprisonment, not only for women, but also for their families and the societies of Latin America. “With the portraits of the imprisoned women, I am concerned with the prison conditions in which human rights seem to be inoperative. I don't think I can change women's lives, but at least I can show through my work that they exist,” explains Ana MarÃa Arévalo Gosen.
Ana MarÃa Arévalo Gosen was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1988. She studied photography at the École supérieure de photographie in Toulouse and at the EFTI (Centro Internacional de Fotografia y Cine) in Madrid. Arévalo Gosen uses photography for visual narratives with high documentary value; One focus of her work are projects on women's rights and environmental issues. For the work "DÃas Eternos" she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. She has already received the LUMIX Award and the Lucas Dolega Award for the series. She is a member of Ayün Fotógrafas, a collective of Latin American photographers. Arévalo Gosen commutes between Bilbao and Latin America.
LEICA Q2 REPORTER
As part of the Celebration of Photography in Wetzlar, Leica Camera announced new product variants of the Leica Q2 and Leica Q2 Monochrom: the Leica Q2 Reporter and Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter are particularly robust variants of Leica’s full-frame compact cameras, designed to offer maximum precision and reliability even in the most adverse conditions.
With these two new releases, the company continues a long tradition of cameras that are specifically geared towards the challenging working environments of reportage and press photographers. Instead of the traditional leather trim, both models feature a protective ‘body armour’ made of Kevlar, a synthetic material also used in the production of bullet-proof vests. This increased protection is complemented by a toned-down, matte finish in dark green, achieved with a specialist paint with particularly scratch and abrasion resistant properties.
The Kevlar trim, characterised by a distinctive weave pattern, protects the camera against mechanical, chemical and thermal hazards. While the fabric is initially almost black, its tone will gradually change through exposure to natural UV light, until it closely matches the camera’s paint finish. The Kevlar fibres become slightly more raised over time, which further improves the photographer’s grip on the camera.
The Leica Q2 Reporter and Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter have been consciously designed to look unobtrusive. The red Leica logo on the front has been omitted, as has the engraving on the top panel. The engravings on the operating elements are discreetly inlaid, so that neither their purpose nor the camera’s true value are immediately apparent.
The Leica Q2 Reporter will be available at specialist retailers from December 9, 2021, priced at € 5550. This will be followed by the launch of the Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter in March 2022; just 350 units of the Q2 Monochrom Reporter will be available worldwide, priced at € 5950.
