The German online magazine
PROFIFOTO reports about the ten year anniversary of the
Leica digital rangefinder cameras. The
write that ten years ago, Leica Camera AG led the rangefinder photography into
the digital age and that he company is celebrating this anniversary with
attractive offers around the Leica M system.
The introduction of the
Leica M8 in 2006 marked the beginning of a new era: It was the first digital
rangefinder camera from Leica that transferred the characteristics of this
particular focusing technology to digital photography. The successor models
such as the Leica M9 from 2009, the first Leica rangefinder camera with a full
frame sensor, offered additional, innovative features to set new standards, but without
abandoning the basic properties of the Leica M-Systems. All digital M models of
the past decade, according to Leica, have one thing in common: they combine the
features of innovative digital technology with decades of constantly evolving
rangefinder technology.
Leica MP Silver
Today, the digital Leica M-generation includes a total of five models: the Leica M (type 240) with high-resolution CMOS full-frame sensor, Live View and Full HD video, the Leica MP (type 240) with the addition of a sapphire crystal display, frame selector and 2 GB of memory standard, the Leica M (type 262), a model that focuses entirely on the essential functions only and dispensed with live view and video, the Leica MD (type 262) without camera display and the Leica M monochrome (type 246) with a black and white sensor only.
Leica M Monochrom à la
carte
As with all of the Leica
analog rangefinder cameras, the digital models are very compact and extremely
quiet for shots close to the action. Their intuitive controls are
user-friendly, to allow the photographer to fully concentrate on his shots. The
timeless design of a Leica M, their production with a high share of manual work
and the use of high quality materials ensure robust everyday practicality and
high durability. The “Made in Germany”
label assures that Leica M models - analog and digital - are reliability over
decades of use with high value retention. These cameras also contribute to the
consistent principle of system compatibility - with the digital Leica M models,
almost all Leica M lenses can be used from 1954 and with an adapter even before
that. The Leica Camera AG is celebrating
the anniversary with numerous attractive offers around the Leica M system,
available in all Leica Stores and through specialty camera retailers worldwide.

I am completely in love with my M8 which still looks and works as factory new. My favourite pictures come from that CCD sensor, and even though I have technically "superior" cameras (Sony A7) the files are unmatched. I will never part from it, even when I get my hands on a sweet M9P :)
