Speculations are all over the place
about what Leica might be showing at the upcoming Photokina in Cologne. As I mentioned in the past, I do not want to
participate in that, I rather deal with facts.
Two years ago, Leica Camera AG set new
standards with their appearance at Photokina, not just with new products, but especially
with photographs. This year too Leica will present a diverse calendar of
events.
The concept of this year's exhibition of
the Leica Gallery in Hall 1 places a focus on impressive photo art based the
theme of music. It takes into account all facets of photography of concert recordings
from very personal portraits of artists to behind-the-scenes photographs. In
addition there will also be projects by musicians for which photography has
become a second passion.
For the first day there will also be an interview with this year's winners of the Leica Hall of Fame Award Thomas
Hoepker and Michael Koetzle at 3 pm. Thomas Hoepker is represented at the Leica
Gallery with his retrospective "Wanderlust".

On September 17 at 11 am, there will be the
lecture " Von Paradiesen und
Apokalypsen" (Of Paradise and Apocalypse) by Austrian photographer Lois
Hechenblaikner. Then, in the afternoon
at 3 pm the world premiere of "The Haight: Love Rock and Revolution" will
be celebrated.
Amelia Davis will provide media
representatives with a new book about the late Grammy Trustee Award winner and
music photographer Jim Marshall, who is represented with three exhibitions at
the Leica Gallery. Jim Marshall has left
powerful portraits of great musicians of his time, including images of Bob
Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead,
Donovan and the Beatles.
On September 19 at 5 pm Thomas Wiegold offers
the lecture " Aus dem Leben von Anja
Niedringhaus" (Of the Life of Anja Niedringhaus). In this presentation he will talk about the lives
of the multi-award-winning photojournalist which he has known personally.
Gerd Ludwig, winner of the Dr. Erich
Salomon prize of the German Photographic Society, will follow with his
presentation on September 20 at 1 pm. York Hovest will finish the Leica at Photokina 2014 event program on
September 21 at 2 pm with his lecture "Hundert Tage Tibet" (One
Hundred Days in Tibet).
