German Magazine 'Spiegel' reports: "The image of the "Napalm Girl" is considered a symbol of wartime atrocities. For more than 50 years, it was said that photographer Nick Ut took the picture. A new analysis casts doubt on this."
They state that the organizers of World Press Photo say that now, more than 50 years after the photo has been taken, there are doubts who the actual photographer was. The organization wrote in a statement that the photographer's name will no longer be disclosed until the matter is clearly clarified
So far, Nick Ut, who worked for the AP news agency, has always been given credit for the photograph. However, doubts were first raised in a documentary earlier this year. Supposedly, a freelancer for AP took the photo.
Spiegel sates that "World Press Photo investigated the authorship. After analyzing the location, the distance from the photographer, and the camera used, it appears that a staff member other than Ut pressed the shutter button."
AP also investigated the authorship and stated that there were reasonable grounds for doubt. However, they also said that there is insufficient evidence to discredit Nick Ut.
