MOBILE PHONE ACCEPTING LEICA LENSES

The question if mobile phones will eventually replace conventional cameras has been asked more than once. The final answer is still out, but the lines are becoming more diffused.

During the development of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, a joint development between Xiaomi and Leica, the company showed a special version which was able to accept Leica M lenses. The camera was basically identical to their flagship model 12 S Ultra, but it was equipped with a second, one inch, 50.3-megapixel sensor. With the proper adapter, even Leica R lenses can be used here and, with an (as of yet unavailable) Leica SL to M adapter, lenes from the Leica SL line could be used as well.

This sensor is centered in the middle of the left side of the unit, designed to accept Leica M lenses with an extension tube to allow proper focusing. The additional sensor is protected by a permanently installed circular piece of sapphire glass.

The 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, originally positioned in the middle of the camera, was shifted to the side, taking up the space that once housed a 48-megapixel periscopic telephoto camera. This indicates that the phone can be used as a traditional mobile phone cameras as well, without any Leica lens installed.

At this point it is uncertain if this camera will ever be marketed. But it is an intriguing idea.
