Leica has announced an
upcoming price increase, going into effect on January 1, 2020. This price
increase affects most Leica products, from cameras and lenses to accessories
like batteries and lens caps. On average, we’re looking at about a 10% increase
across the board. There are a few notable exceptions though, like the Q2, SL2
and all Sport Optics products (binoculars and spotting scopes), which will not
be affected by the price increase.
The reason for the
increase is a straightforward one. On October 2, the Office of the United
States Trade Representative announced and imposed a 25% tariff on a wide range
of products imported from certain European Union countries, including Germany.
These tariffs went into full effect on October 18. You can read more about the
tariff action on the USTR website here.
Unfortunately for US-based
Leica users, German photographic lenses are one of the product categories that
are included in the new tariff schedule. Products subject to the 25% tariff
include select photographic lenses and lens accessories produced in Leica’s
Wetzlar, Germany factory. At the same time, other tariffs were imposed on
certain accessory items from China, like batteries, straps and cases.
So, why haven’t prices
already gone up? First, Leica USA was able to stock up on many items before the
tariffs went into effect and has been utilizing this inventory to send to
dealers and Stores. But all new lenses and lens accessories coming from Germany
since October 18 have been subject to the new tariffs. Simply put, Leica has
been absorbing these costs for the last few months. Obviously, this is only
sustainable for so long.
Moving forward, rather
than impose a 25% increase on all products affected by the tariffs, Leica has
decided to spread out the cost across a wider range of products in order to
minimize the impact to customers.
For now, all in-stock
items are still available at current pricing, but as of January 1st, 2020,
prices will be going up. If you have any questions, you can reach out to Leica

Below is a list of
affected serialized products and their corresponding price increases. These are
just the big ticket items, but hundreds of other products are going up as well.
