Yesterday I had the pleasure
to see the new photography exhibition at MIA, the Minneapolis Institute of
Art. This year is the 100th
anniversary of MIA, and this exhibition celebrates with a showing of
photographs from each of these 100 years.
MIA writes on their website www.artsmia.org:
100+: A Photograph For Every Year of the
MIA
“100+” celebrates the MIA’s Birthday Year with
photographs from every year since the museum’s founding. With more than 12,000
images in the collection of the Department of Photography and New Media, the
hard part was choosing one from each year! Some years were easier than others:
1916 offered just five works, while 1993 had 333.
The resulting exhibition reveals something wonderfully
idiosyncratic: freed from the narrative traditions of photographic history, yet
tied to the collecting habits and tastes of MIA curators.

But what about the +? The MIA’s interest in
photography reaches back to 1903, before this building—or the MIA itself—even
existed. Known then as the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, this precursor
held its first photography exhibition in the Minneapolis Public Library at 1834
Emerson Avenue North. It would be another 70 years before the MIA established
its Department of Photography, in 1972.

The exhibition runs from
March 19 to October 18, 2015.
