Leica announced the
formation of a new subsidiary, the Leica Camera LC Light & Imaging Systems. They are part of Leica Camera AG, based in
Munich, Germany, and develop tailor-made optical systems for industrial
applications.
With the newly founded
company Leica Camera AG wants to strengthen its international B2B business. Since January 2017 Dipl.-Ing. Jakob Bleicher has
been leading the wholly-owned Leica subsidiary together with Leica CEO Markus
Limberger.
The eight-strong team of
experts has many years of experience in the areas of industrial optics, photo
and lab technology as well as in the acquisition and consulting of
international B2B customers in the optical and optoelectronic industry.
Among other things, the team
at LC Light & Imaging Systems GmbH will use the state-of-the-art production
capabilities of Leica Camera AG in Wetzlar and the second factory in Portugal
to produce industrial optics. The emphasis is on the customer-specific
development of optical systems for industrial applications, such as 3D
surveying and high-performance inspection.
"We are pleased to
work with our experienced colleagues at LC Light & Imaging Systems to
expand our international industrial business and to bundle our expertise.
Especially in close cooperation with the production sites of Leica Camera AG in
Wetzlar and Portugal, we see great potential to leverage existing synergies,
"said Markus Limberger, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Leica Camera AG.
Jakob Bleicher, Managing
Director of LC Light & Imaging Systems GmbH, added: "From Munich's
point of view, the establishment of the LC LIS is very beneficial for the
customers. With the two high-tech production facilities at Leica Camera AG, we
now have the opportunity to offer the complete product cycle from the design of
optics to the design up to the pattern and serial production of high-end
lenses. "
This move once again shows
the farsightedness of Leica to avoid being caught up in a shrinking
photographic market, something experienced by many of their competitors. Over the last few weeks we saw considerable
layoffs, restructuring of photo and camera divisions and even the announcements
of companies leaving the photographic and camera market altogether. By diversifying what they have to offer their
customers, Leica is proactive in the changing world of optical companies.
