Bruce Gilden exhibition "Farm Boys and Farm Girls"




The partnership between Leica and the photography exhibition Photo London at Somerset House will be open for the third time this year, from May 17 to 20.  With a record number of exhibitors from approximately 100 of the world's leading galleries, the fair will be a magnet for photo enthusiasts with its impressive masterpieces of contemporary and historical photography.

This year Leica is presenting an exclusive exhibition "Farm Boys and Farm Girls USA" by Bruce Gilden in the Leica Collector's Lounge at the Terrace Pavilion of Somerset House.  The American magnum photographer, a self-proclaimed "city boy," spent much of his career in urban areas and could not be further from the lifestyle of the Midwestern agricultural community.  However, when he photographed several State Fairs in 2014, he was deeply impressed by the young people who presented and sold their livestock, an unfamiliar and fascinating world, far removed from his comfort zone.

For the first time, Gilden's main focus is on young people, who appeared more mature to him than their actual age. Growing up with farm animals and the everyday proximity to life and death prepares you for your own demise.  In 2017, Gilden decided to continue his work of the young farm people.  He accompanied them to state fairs, where they compete and learn to become successful members of the agricultural community.

The series "Farm Boys and Farm Girls USA" was recorded exclusively with the Leica S system.
Bruce Gilden will give a lecture in the main auditorium of the fair on May 18 at 7 pm and will be available for autographs on May 17 and 19 at 4 pm.
