NEW LEICA M6 and NEW LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4

Today Leica announced the rebirth of the Leica M6.

For more than 100 years, Leica Camera AG has been a synonym for cameras and lenses with permanent values such as reliability, consistency, and quality. With analog photography experiencing a renaissance – the new Leica M6 represents Leica Camera’s continued commitment to these values.

The Leica M6 from 2022 relies on a modern version of the Leica M rangefinder with a 0.72x magnification. Furthermore, all of its optical surfaces are now coated and thus less sensitive to stray light. The light meter in the latest M6 now shows the correct exposure via a red dot in addition to the two arrow symbols originally used. Additionally, it is equipped with a battery warning indicator. The top cover has also been redesigned: while the cover of the preceding model was made of diecast zinc, it is now milled from solid brass and enhanced with an abrasion-resistant black lacquer. The exposure meter in the M6 measures light via a brightened area on the mechanically controlled cloth shutter. Like the original from 1984, the new edition of the M6 is also adorned with the red Leitz logo.

The M6 remains true to itself and preserves all other typical character traits such as the slanted rewind crank for the film. Handmade in Germany, it is an extremely reliable companion for all those who appreciate the lasting and contemplative nature of analog photography.

Another new addition is the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4, silver, a reissue of the famous version 1 'steel rim'.

The Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 joins the ranks of the Leica Classic Line as the fourth member next to the Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6, the Thambar-M 90mm f/2.2 and the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH.

Since its launch in 1961 and after more than 35 years of almost unchanged production, this M lens has been enjoying great popularity up to the present day. The world’s fastest wide-angle lens at the time has also always been very compact and extremely light with a weight of only 200 grams. Last but not least, it convinces with its imaging performance and the unique image effect. Photographing with maximum aperture creates pictures with an especially soft, almost magical bokeh which is hard to achieve even with digital image processing. Its extraordinary pictorial look earned the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 the title “True King of Bokeh”. Photographing at open aperture in backlit conditions creates intended lens flares that can be used for specific creative effects. After stopping down to f/2.8, it produces very sharp and particularly distortion-free pictures which also meet modern requirements for image quality.

Its relaunched edition is made in the Leica factory in Wetzlar – in the original vintage design and with the identical optical calculation of the first Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4. Furthermore, the stainless steel front ring known as “Steel Rim”, the lockable focus ring and the black attachable lens hood are also modelled on the original. What is new, however, is the second, round lens hood with E46 thread which enables the use of filters and is also included in delivery.
