Huawei has announced a new cell phone, the Huawei Mate 9 with a newly designed Leica dual camera.  Just as with the Huawei P9, the phone uses two camera modules, a color one with a 12 megapixel resolution and a black and white one with a resolution of 20 megapixels, coupled to Leica Summarit-H f/2.2 lenses. The image processor combines the images from both cameras resulting in better overall image quality.

The new camera(s) also offer better depth-of-field blur simulation ad a wide zoom range.  New is a six-axis image stabilization and a 4 in 1 hybrid autofocus system, utilizing, contrast, phase, laser and depth.  Unlike the Huawei P9, the two lenses are placed vertically in the center of the phone instead next to each other on one side.

Besides the new camera, the phone has a 5.9-inch 1080p LCD screen and a 4,000mAh battery that can be charged to 60% in just30 minutes.  The main processor features an octa-core Kirin 960 chipset, 4GB ram and an octa-core Mali graphics processor.  Video is offered in 4K and there is an 8MP f/1.9 front camera.  The phone uses Android 7.0 with 64GB storage, and micro SD support.

Here is a list of the main features:
  • Second generation Leica dual-lens camera with 12-megapixel RGB sensor, 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and Hybrid Zoom, featuring a superior 2x magnification
  • Kirin 960 chipset, the world’s highest performing smartphone processor
  • EMUI 5.0 intuitive user interface
  • SuperCharge technology that delivers a 60% charge in 30 minutes

No information regarding price and availability are available at this time.  However, it is thought that the price in Europe will be €699 (approx. $775)

There is also a Porsche Design premium version version of the Huawei Mate 9.  It features a 5.5 inch Quad HD dual edge curved display. It’s powered by the same Kirin 960 processor like the Mate 9 but offers 6GB of DDR4 RAM. It also has 256GB of onboard storage which is impressive to say the least.  This edition of the Huawei Mate 9will only be available in a graphite black color with an approximate price of €1395 (1540).
