Leica owners and
collectors are often criticized for paying too much for their purchases. Yet it is fairly obvious that these are very
good investments. Rarely have non Leica
cameras, lenses and accessories ever come close to demand the prices
collectible Leica equipment does.
This has once again become
crystal clear with the results of the last WestLicht auction in Vienna. They offered a wide variety of items. May of
which exceeded the starting prices by astonishing amounts. Here are some of the results:
The Leica M3 Schwarz Lack Nr. 915252 „Herbert List,“ which was made in
1958, had a starting bid of €24,000.
This was a Leica M3, used by the well-known German Magnum photographer
Herbert List. For many years he worked
for magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazar and Life. The final bid climbed to an astonishing €78,000.
WestLicht offered two previously
unknown Leica Gehrkameras (Leica Gun Cameras) which were made by Ernst Leitz
New York, first offered in 1938. One was
a RITOO gun with a 20cm (200mm) Long lens, the other a RITEL with a 40cm
(400mm) lens. Both were listed with a
starting price of €90,000. Surprisingly,
bit sets achieved a new record price of €168,00.
Photographs were also part
of the auction. The famous Alfred Eisenstaedt
photograph VJ Day Kiss had a starting price of €8,000. It achieved a record €48,000.
It is very much noteworthy
to mention the sale of the oldest known Nikon camera from 1948, making it the
third Nikon production model ever made.
It was listed with a starting bnid of €90,000 and climbed to the astonishing
final bid of €384.000. One has to wonder
what the Leica nay-sayers would have to say about that.
