LEICA ANNOUNCES CL ‘100 JAHRE BAUHAUS’ EDITION

By David Farkas, Leica Store Miami

Today, Leica has announced a new special edition camera set commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus school of art and design in Germany. The Leica CL ‘Jahre 100 Bauhaus’ Edition includes a silver chrome Leica CL camera, matching silver chrome 18mm /2.8 Elmarit-TL ASPH lens and a black leather strap.

The custom black leather covering on the camera and the strap are both embossed with the Bauhaus word mark. The classic Leica red dot has been replaced with a smaller black Leica dot, giving the camera a minimalist and monochromatic look.

Aesthetics aside, there are no functional or performance changes from a standard CL and 18mm TL lens. The set is limited to just 150 pieces worldwide and will only be available through Leica Stores and Boutiques, at a price of $3,750. Deliveries are slated to start later this month.

A Good Value

What’s really crazy is that the special edition set is actually slightly less expensive than the standard Leica CL Prime Kit in Silver. Both feature the same camera and lens, but the standard Prime Kit doesn’t include the premium leather strap. So, once again, we’ve got a special edition that represents an excellent value, even for non-collectors who just like the look of the Jahre 100 Bauhaus over the stock configuration.

Press Release

Leica Camera celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus school of art and design in Germany with a new special edition camera, the Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus’. The set comprises a silver chrome Leica CL camera with matching silver Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens and a black leather carrying strap. The leather covering of the camera and the leather strap are embossed with the Bauhaus word mark. The Leica logo, in keeping with the Bauhaus emphasis on minimalist aesthetics, has been reduced and desaturated to pure black to give the entire camera a monochromatic palette. This edition is strictly limited to 150 sets worldwide and will be sold exclusively through Leica Stores and Boutiques.

Founded in 1919 and operating until 1933, the Bauhaus was famous for its approach to design and the arts. Its philosophy of “form follows function” was influential to the world of art and remains today a keystone of modern design. The “bauhaus” word mark discreetly emblazoned on the camera’s front was originally created by Joost Schmidt, one of the famous graphic designers of the Bauhaus and acting director of the photography department from 1928 to 1932. The combination of the subtle bauhaus lettering and black Leica logo with the Leica CL’s discreet looks and simplified controls make the Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus’ an elegant and iconic piece of German design.
