2,790,000 USD for Leica 0-Serie
On May 12, the WestLicht camera auction set a new world record for the most expensive camera ever sold. A Leica 0-Series with serial number 116 sold for 2,160,000 EUR (appr. 2,790,000 USD). That eclipsed the previous world record of 1.3 million EUR (appr. 1.9 million USD) from last year, for a 0-Series Leica, Serial number 107.
That brings up the question what any of the Ur-Leica prototypes might be worth. Obviously, the one in the Leica Museum in Solms will never be sold. But as we know, Oskar Barnack made a second one which is in an unknown collection in the US.
