OSKAR BARNACK AWARD 2019




The winners of this yerar’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award have been announced. From about 2,300 entries, the winner was US photographer Mustafah Abdulaziz with his series “Water".

   Mustafah Abdulaziz

 Abdulaziz was born in New York in 1986. He studied Journalism and Political Science.  He is self-taught as a photographer. In 2011, he moved to Berlin after working as a contract photographer for the Wall Street Journal. His long-standing Water project, on which he has been working for more than eight years, has been supported by the United Nations, WaterAid, WWF, VSCO and Google. It was released in "Spiegel", "Guardian", "New Yorker" and in "Time".

In the category "Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer" for young photographers up to the age of 28 years, the German photographer Nanna Heitmann prevailed with the series "Hiding from Baba Yaga" about the Yenisei River which is one of the longest rivers in the world.  It was the giding line that Nanna Heitmann followed through Siberia.

Born in Ulm in 1994, Nanna Heitmann studied Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at college in Hanover. She spent a semester abroad in Tomsk, Siberia. In 2018, she was shortlisted for the Lensculture online magazine’s Emerging Talents Award for her work. The same year the series shown here earned her the Vogue Italia Prize of the PHMuseum’s Women Photographers Grant. She became a Magnum Agency nominee in 2019






 The winners and finalists of the LOBA will be honored on September 25th in Berlin.
